Liturgy: Advent 1 - The Advent Hope
Jesus said, ‘Keep awake,
for you do not know
on what day your Lord is coming.’
Amen. Come soon, Lord Jesus!
The first candle is lit and this response is used

Jesus is the light of the world.
A light no darkness can ever put out.

Hymn: Christmas Is Coming

Christmas Is Coming

Words & Music: John L Bell (b 1949)

Christmas is coming
The Church is glad to sing
And let the advent candles
Brightly burn in a ring.
The first is for God's promise
To put the wrong things right,
And bring to earth's darkness
The hope of love and light.
Christmas is coming
The Church is glad to sing
And let the advent candles
Brightly burn in a ring.
The second is for the Prophet
Who said that Christ would come.
With good news for many
And angry words for some.
Christmas is coming
The Church is glad to sing
And let the advent candles
Brightly burn in a ring.
The third is for the Baptist,
Who cried ‘Prepare the way,
Be ready for Jesus,
Both now and every day’
Christmas is coming
The Church is glad to sing
And let the advent candles
Brightly burn in a ring.
The fourth is for the virgin,
Who mothered God’s own Son,
And sang how God’s justice
Was meant for everyone.
Christmas is coming
The Church is glad to sing
And let the advent candles
Brightly burn in a ring.
At last we light the candle,
Kept new for Christmas Day,
This shines bright for Jesus,
New born, and here to stay.
Christ is among us
The candles in a ring
Remind us that our saviour
Will light up everything.

Liturgy: Invitation to Confession
Christ the Light of the world has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts.
Let us turn to the light and confess our sins.

Liturgy: B1
The kingdom is yours,
but we turn away from your just rule:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
The power is yours,
but we trust in our own power and strength:
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
The glory is yours,
but we fall short of the glory of God:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

SlideSet: Liturgy: Lent: Absolution (1)
May the Father of all mercies
cleanse us from our sins, and restore us in his image
to the praise and glory of his name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Liturgy: Gospel Reading (part 1)
Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Reading: Matthew 24:36-44

Matthew 24:36-44

read by Scouts

"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;
and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.
Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.
So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Liturgy: Gospel Reading (part 2)
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn: I Will Enter His Gates

I Will Enter His Gates

Words & Music: Leona Von Brethorst (1923-2010)

I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart;
I will enter His courts with praise.
I will say this is the day that the Lord has made.
I will rejoice for He has made me glad.
He has made me glad, He has made me glad,
I will rejoice for He has made me glad.
He has made me glad, He has made me glad,
I will rejoice for He has made me glad.

Liturgy: Authorised Affirmation of Faith (E11)
We say together in faith
Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God almighty,
who was, and is, and is to come.
We believe in God the Father,
who created all things:
for by his will they were created
and have their being.
We believe in God the Son,
who was slain:
for with his blood,
he purchased us for God,
from every tribe and language,
from every people and nation.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit:
the Spirit and the Bride say, 'Come!'
Even so come, Lord Jesus!
Amen.

As The Deer

Words & Music: Martin Nystrom (b 1956)

As the deer pants for the water
So my soul longs after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You.
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You.
I want You more than gold or silver
Only You can satisfy
You alone are the real joy giver
And the apple of my eye.
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You.
You're my friend and You are my brother
Even though You are a King.
I love you more than any other
So much more than anything.
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You.

Liturgy: Words for dedication (I3)
Lord Jesus Christ, you emptied yourself, taking the form of a servant.

Through your love, make us servants of one another.
Lord Jesus Christ, for our sake you became poor.

May our lives and gifts enrich the life of your world.

Collect: Collect for The First Sunday of Advent

Collect for:

The First Sunday of Advent

Almighty God,
give us grace to cast away the works of darkness
and to put on the armour of light,
now in the time of this mortal life,
in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;
that on the last day,
when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge the living and the dead,
we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Liturgy: The Lord's Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, so we pray
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Hymn: Our Eyes Have Seen The Glory

Our Eyes Have Seen The Glory

Words: Roland Meredith
Music: traditional American melody

Our eyes have seen the glory
Of our Saviour, Christ the Lord;
He is seated at His Father's side
In love and full accord;
From there upon the sons of men
His Spirit is outpoured,
All hail, ascended King!
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
All hail, ascended King!
He came to Earth at Christmas
And was made a man like us;
He taught, He healed, He suffered,
And they nailed Him to a cross;
He rose again on Easter day,
Our Lord victorious,
All hail, ascended King!
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
All hail, ascended King!
The good news of His kingdom
Must be preached to every shore,
The news of peace and pardon,
And the end of strife and war;
The secret of His kingdom
Is to serve Him evermore,
All hail, ascended King!
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
All hail, ascended King!
His kingdom is a family
Of men of every race,
They live their lives in harmony,
Enabled by His grace;
They follow His example
Till they see Him face to face,
All hail, ascended King!
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
Glory, glory, hallelujah,
All hail, ascended King!

Liturgy: The Grace
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.
Amen.

Liturgy: The Dismissal
As we await our coming Saviour,
go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.
