Reading: 1 Samuel 1:20-28

1 Samuel 1:20-28

read by Angela Adams

So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."
When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,
Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."
"Do what seems best to you," her husband Elkanah told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,
and she said to him, "Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there.

Reading: John 19:25-27

John 19:25-27

read by Jenny Davies

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son,"
and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

Hymn: For The Beauty Of The Earth

For The Beauty Of The Earth

Music: from an English melody

Hymn: Tell Out, My Soul

Tell Out, My Soul

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926)
Music: W Greatorex (1877-1949)

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!
Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;
Tender to me the promise of his word;
In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of His Name!
Make known His might, the deeds His arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age the same;
His holy Name, the Lord, the Mighty One.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of His might!
Powers and dominions lay their glory by.
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.
Tell out, my soul, the glories of His word!
Firm is His promise, and His mercy sure.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
To children's children and for evermore!

Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart

Words & Music: Henry Smith (b 1952)

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son
Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son
And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"
And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"
Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son
Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son
And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"
And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"
Give Thanks

Hymn: Let All The World

Let All The World

Words: George Herbert (1593-1633)
Music: Basil Harwood (1859-1949)

Let all the world in ev'ry corner sing,
"My God and King!"
The heav'ns are not too high,
God's praise may thither fly;
The earth is not too low,
God's praises there may grow.
Let all the world in ev'ry corner sing,
"My God and King!"
Let all the world in ev'ry corner sing,
"My God and King!"
The church with psalms must shout:
No door can keep them out.
But, more than all, the heart
Must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in ev'ry corner sing,
"My God and King!"

Hymn: Now Thank We All Our God

Now Thank We All Our God

Words: Martin Rinkart (1586-1649)
translated by Catherine Winkworth (1829-78)
Music: Johann Crüger (1598-1662)

Now thank we all our God,
With hearts, and hands, and voices;
Who wondrous things hath done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mothers' arms,
Hath blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.
O may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us;
To keep us in His grace,
And guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills
In this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns,
With Them in highest heaven;
The one eternal God,
Whom heaven and earth adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.
